SHAPE THE FUTURE THROUGH TRADITION
Through civic engagement.
Civic engagement has a long tradition in Cologne: the Old University of Cologne, the *Universitas Studii sancte civitas Coloniensis*, was founded in 1388 as the first university in the Holy Roman Empire to be established not by princes or emperors, but by the citizenry. Considerable private endowment funds also played a decisive role in the re-establishment of the university in 1919.
The Cologne University Foundation carries this civic commitment into the future. We enable citizens to get involved in supporting their university.
In doing so, we focus specifically on those areas that require long-term support to secure the university’s future: cutting-edge research, early-career academics, the transfer of knowledge to society, international networking and the strengthening of the region.
Further information on the purpose of the Cologne University Foundation can also be found in our Articles of Association.
