In the University of Cologne’s student laboratory, students from a chemistry class at the Bettina-von-Arnim Gymnasium participated in a hands-on workshop.
The participants produced synthetic vanillin from a byproduct of paper manufacturing, working with laboratory equipment similar to that used in university teaching and research.
It quickly became clear that all the teams had succeeded: Suddenly, the entire lab smelled of vanilla.
By funding this project, the University of Cologne Foundation promotes early access to scientific work and strengthens the exchange between high schools and the university.
